Ponder This-The Forgotten: "We The PEOPLE"
WE The PEOPLE
The first words in our Constitution are "We the People."
They weren't just words. They represented a transformative thought in the Western world, that the ultimate power rested with the people, and not with the officials, power structures, or methods lorded over them.
We are where we are today because we have forgotten that.
The source of our pain isn't that we've forgotten about the enumerated powers. The source of our frustration isn't that the government is violating the Constitution. The source of our injustice isn't because corporations and special interests have control.
All of those things matter. None of them matter as much as the fact we have forgotten the "We."
We have forgotten about the Cajun navies of the world, neighbors rescuing neighbors. We have forgotten about the food banks in our community ensuring a hot meal, or the homeless shelters offering a bed tonight instead of a 6-month wait.
We have forgotten that the solutions are in our backyard. We have forgotten that most of the public services we pay taxes for are provided better by We the People.
And because we have forgotten us, we have asked more and more from our taxpayer, only to deliver him less and less results. We have created more and more victims, only to have less to serve them with.
We have angered the taxpayer, and he has marched in Washington demanding his money be returned. We have devastated the receiver of the service, turning him away because we have squandered our resources.
We have let those who need our help the most languish, and sentenced those who want to help to creating more victims with their good intentions.
We have turned compassion in cynicism.
We have turned a helping hand into a blind eye.
We have pitted those who need the most in our society against those who have the most to provide.
Because we have forgotten the
"We"
That, too, stops now.
We. Do. Better.
